Yang Miaozhen was a female military leader during the Song–Jin period, a time of warfare and political instability. After the death of her brother Yang An’er, she became a major leader of the Red Jacket Army and commanded a large armed force. She was not only involved in military campaigns; while her husband was away fighting, she also exercised authority over their political and military base.

Yang Miaozhen challenges the idea that women should remain behind men and simply provide support. She did not appear in history only because of her relationship with a powerful man; she directly took responsibility for military leadership and political management. Her story represents female agency in action: when facing uncertainty and danger, a woman can step forward and take responsibility rather than waiting for someone else to act.
