Li Qingzhao was a famous poet of the Song Dynasty and is considered one of the most important female poets in Chinese literary history. Born into a literary and educated family, she began writing poetry at a young age. Her work explores love, loneliness, nature, personal experience, and emotional life. Her importance also lies in the distinctive female voice she created through her writing.

At a time when women’s lives were strongly shaped by family, marriage, and social expectations, Li Qingzhao gave her inner world a voice. Through poetry, she expressed her emotions, desires, thoughts, and experiences rather than simply conforming to an ideal of feminine obedience. She used literature to establish an identity of her own. This is why she represents “Finding Your Voice” in Her Choice: before deciding what kind of person others want you to become, you must first listen to your own feelings and understand what you truly want.
