Qin Liangyu was a famous female general of the Ming Dynasty, who lived from 1574 to 1648. She commanded troops and became known for her military ability and leadership. Her father believed that girls should receive education alongside boys, and Qin Liangyu studied history, classical texts, martial arts, horse riding, and archery.

In traditional social imagination, warfare, military leadership, physical strength, and authority were often associated with men. Women were more commonly expected to be gentle, obedient, and centred on domestic life. Qin Liangyu entered a space dominated by men. She rode horses, practised archery, commanded troops, and took responsibility in times of conflict. Her story challenges the stereotype that women are naturally weak or incapable of leadership. In Her Choice, she therefore represents not simply physical strength, but the courage to act without fear.
