Zhu Shuzhen was a prominent female poet of the Song Dynasty and an important figure in the history of Chinese women’s literature. Her writing is strongly personal and emotionally expressive, and scholars have paid particular attention to the way her poetry gives expression to women’s experiences and emotions.

Women were often expected to control or hide their emotions, especially feelings surrounding love, marriage, and personal desire. Zhu Shuzhen brought these emotions into literature. Rather than presenting women only as ideal wives or obedient daughters, her poetry expresses love, disappointment, pain, desire, and personal thought. She therefore allows women to become the narrators of their own experiences rather than simply characters within someone else’s story.
