Fu Hao lived during the Shang Dynasty and was one of King Wu Ding’s important royal consorts. However, she was much more than a royal wife. Oracle-bone inscriptions and objects discovered in her tomb show that she held significant military, religious, and political authority. She led large military campaigns and also participated in important ritual activities.

If Fu Hao were understood only through the traditional roles of “wife” or “mother,” much of her historical importance would be lost. She held military authority, participated in religious rituals, and possessed significant social status. Her story demonstrates that women could hold military and political power even in the very early history of China.
